Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), also known as Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), consists of the non-surgical implantation of a new aortic valve in persons with a diagnosis of aortic valve stenosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing of the aortic valve, one of the four heart valves.
Aortic valve stenosis is a very frequent cardiac disease, becoming more frequent as the population ages; it imposes a significant workload on the heart, causing several structural and functional changes, leading to advanced damage and failure.
Persons with symptomatic aortic valve stenosis may need surgery to replace the valve. Still, many conditions impose significant risk for surgery, enough to choose this non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure, even with the possibility of hospital discharge the other day after the intervention.
